Maybe fewer goals, but more scoreboardSabres fans who show up Friday morning to watch the first practice of training camp will notice a large, gaping void above the ice that'll make HSBC Arena look more like an airplane hangar.
The video scoreboard will be gone.
No, the JumboTron didn't fall from the ceiling again. And it hasn't been taken down for autumn cleaning.
The Sabres are having a large, high-definition video scoreboard and ribbon boards installed in time for the regular season. The system will be similar to the astonishing setup used by the Bruins in TD Banknorth Garden. >> STORY

http://www.tdbanknorthgarden.com/business_advertising.aspThe centerpiece of the TD Banknorth Garden's renovations is the country's first indoor arena, fully functional high-definition (HD) scoreboard called Garden HDX. The massive state-of-the-art scoreboard features four larger-than-life screens along with 3 rings of LED technology, bringing fans closer to the action with amazing clarity like never seen before. Easily viewed from any seat, it generates great interest and high sponsor recall. Its features include:
* 4 HD Diamond Vision Display Screens with audio and video capabilities (12'9" x 21'4" each screen)
* 3 LED rings with animation, graphics and text capabilities
They must use multiple LCD panels per display I'd say 4 LCD panels. They could do it cheaper with an array of 9 or 12 panels depending on the aspect ratio they are going for.
I've got one question though do pucks ever accidentally get flipped up into the panels like on clearing attempts? That is one hell of an expensive mistake even one of the panels that comprise one of the arrays would cost somewhere in the 80k or more range. Not to mention the cost to ship and install it.

I think that actual look of it is so ugly and there is too much empty space up there. I would rather have the screens all come together flush but the screens will look awesome. Hd baby!!

So, we can watch the sabres game in HD at the arena, the next step is to be able to watch the sabres game in HD in our living rooms

It wasn't about the money. Larry Quinn hated Briere and didn't want him on his team. They offered the money.

part of the problem is that "a new scoreboard" doesn't really excite a whole heck of a lot of people into talking about it. But what proves MY theory correct in this thread is that "People from Buffalo cannot resist complaining about people who make more than them in professional sports." It's a given in anything related to Buffalo.

I think its a given in the whole continent.... Most sports players are overpaid and thats a fact of life.
I think they are putting in a new HD scoreboard to increase the arena experience in hopes to increase arena revenue and to keep the attendance from tailing off if they suck this year or next.

One of my professors was mentioning that. I think he's worked with some franchises before and even with the Sabres. They'll be upgrading and using probably the Daktronics Venus-7000 system like almost all other sports franchises, it's the same system we have here at my school. It's a pretty sick system, I operate it at the home football and soccer games. Deffinately about time they did something with it.

I have a feeling the Sabres new Scoreboard will look a lot like the Preds new scoreboard! Here's a video of it. U have to press the play button.

The Preds one is similar to what they put up here in Calgary and it looks fantastic. You will enjoy it.

I actually really like how everything flows up behind the HD screens... I don't think I would like just empty space behind there in all the gaps.
